Lake Success, NY

Lake Success is a quiet, green village on Long Island's North Shore that packs a surprising amount of history into about two square miles. It takes its name from a natural, spring-fed kettle lake dating back to the Ice Age, which the village keeps strictly protected and scenic. The community was incorporated in 1927, but its most famous era arrived right after World War II. From 1946 to 1951, a converted Sperry Gyroscope plant on Marcus Avenue served as the temporary headquarters for the United Nations while the Manhattan campus was being built. Major international agreements were drafted right here, and the first official blue UN flag flew over the grounds in 1947.
