Lake Tanglewood, TX

Lake Tanglewood is a Randall County village southeast of Amarillo, built around the lake impounded on Palo Duro Creek. The 2020 census counted 686 residents. It began in the early 1960s as a private residential development on land leased from the Curry Ranch, incorporated in 1971, and started its own volunteer fire department soon after. A community church followed in the 1970s, and the village’s town hall and clubhouse had earlier doubled as worship space. Nearly all of the local story circles back to the water: the lake covers about a quarter of the village’s total area, and roads bend around a gated, year-round residential community. Inside the village, the routine is shaped by lake access, the golf course, clubhouse, community church, volunteer services, and the practical rules that come with shared private infrastructure.

Boating, fishing, swimming, and water sports sit alongside golf and neighborhood gatherings, while Amarillo supplies the bigger-city errands and work connections. Lake Tanglewood is not a conventional Panhandle town with a main street and storefronts. It is a small incorporated lake village with its own council, water arrangements, church, fire volunteers, and a strong sense of place tied to Palo Duro Creek. The local feel comes from that mix of private-road life and civic responsibility, all wrapped around a reservoir in the open country south of Amarillo.
