About Lakewood Club

Lakewood Club is a Muskegon County village that began as a 1912 resort scheme around Fox Lake. A newspaper promotion sold tiny lots, and more than 1,000 were claimed before World War I; at its high point the resort had hundreds of cottages, hotels, a pavilion, a boat livery, and even a street railway linking Fox Lake to the Pere Marquette station. The Depression emptied many cottages, and the area gradually shifted from summer resort to year-round village. Fox Lake still sets the geography, while official village status arrived in 1967. Lakewood Club is a place where the resort-era street grid is still hiding underneath an ordinary residential map.
