LaMoure, ND

LaMoure is the seat of LaMoure County, on the James River in southeastern North Dakota. The city was founded in 1882 and named for Judson LaMoure, a territorial legislator; county residents chose it as the seat in 1884. The 2020 census counted 764 people. Its setting is shaped by the river valley and by the routes that connect the small city to the county's farm communities and larger regional towns.

School and county functions keep daily life concentrated. LaMoure Public School runs K-12 as home of the Loboes, and the city has served as a gathering point for county government and local events. The Chan SanSan Scenic Backway passes through town, while LaMoure County Memorial Park sits five miles north near Grand Rapids with interpretive panels and a museum. LaMoure also carries a piece of navigation-technology history: it was one of eight global Omega Navigation System transmission sites until that system closed in 1997. A county seat, river town, and former long-range navigation station all fit on the same map.
