Lancaster, NH

Lancaster is the Coös County seat on the Connecticut River, with broad meadows between the river and the northern New Hampshire hills. The town took its name from Lancaster, England, and 19th-century farms made use of the fertile river land; in 1874 Lancaster ranked among New Hampshire’s most productive agricultural towns. Lancaster had 3,218 residents in 2020. The main village, Grange, South Lancaster, and Mount Prospect give the town several distinct local landscapes. Weeks State Park carries Mount Prospect’s story, with John Wingate Weeks’s former summer estate, an auto road, trails, and views over the Connecticut River Valley.

The Lancaster Fair has been running since 1870 and still brings farm shows, racing, food, and music to the same North Country calendar. The Israel River joins the town’s water network, and the county-seat role keeps government and everyday services centered in the village. Lancaster is where meadow roads, mountain views, a long-running fair, and Great North Woods travel all meet. The fairgrounds keep that connection current.
