About Landess
Landess is a Grant County CDP northeast of Marion, laid out by William Landess on April 27, 1882. The Clover Leaf Railroad had reached the area as a narrow-gauge line in 1880 and later was rebuilt to standard gauge, giving the settlement a store, a post office, and an agent who also handled railroad business. Landess sits between Washington and Van Buren townships, with the county road and historic rail alignment doing more to define its setting than a municipal center. Its present footprint keeps the early pattern visible: a small crossroads established where farm service, mail, and rail movement met.
