Lanesboro, MN

Lanesboro is a Fillmore County city in southeast Minnesota's Bluff Country, where the Root River runs below limestone bluffs. The 2020 census counted 724 residents. It was named for early landowner F. A. Lane, but the town's present personality comes from the way river, railroad, and downtown fit together. The Lanesboro stone dam was completed in 1868 to power mills, and brick storefronts, churches, and Victorian homes still give the center a strong river-town shape. The rail line is gone, but its route became the Root River State Trail.

That trail is the town's everyday through-line, bringing bikes and walkers right into the compact downtown. Lanesboro's local scene is unusually arts-forward for a place this size: Commonweal Theatre Company has been performing here since 1989, Lanesboro Arts helped turn public spaces into places like the Poetry Parking Lot, and the Talking Trail adds local stories to walks along the river and historic streets. The Coffee Street pedestrian bridge, galleries, inns, and riverfront businesses all sit close together. Lanesboro feels like a former mill-and-rail town that found a second life in trails, theater, and a compact main street.
