Larned, KS

At the 2020 census, Larned was a Pawnee County city of 3,769 and the county seat, laid out in 1873 on the edge of the Santa Fe Trail country. The city took its name from nearby Fort Larned, which operated from 1859 to 1878 and was named for Colonel Benjamin F. Larned. The fort protected commerce and mail on the trail, then lost its military job as railroads reached Kansas. Settlers arrived in the 1870s, and Larned grew into the county’s civic and farm center.

Four miles east of town, the Santa Fe Trail Center picks up the whole regional story in one place. Its museum and research library cover Indigenous history, trail trade, Fort Larned, settlement, farming, ranching, and Pawnee County records. Fort Larned itself still holds its original buildings, while the county courthouse, Memorial Library, schools, and Larned State Hospital make the city’s modern civic life visible. Larned is not merely a town named after a fort; it is the place where the trail, the county seat, and the surrounding prairie keep meeting.
