About Laurens

Laurens is a city in northwest Pocahontas County, Iowa, with 1,264 people at the 2020 census. The city was formally platted and dedicated on December 24, 1881, and its name honors Henry and John Laurens, a father and son from a French Huguenot family who became South Carolina residents and loyal supporters of the Colonies during the Revolution. That gives Laurens an older East Coast name in a town laid out on the northwest Iowa map.

School life is organized through the Laurens-Marathon Community School District. The district was formed by consolidation on July 1, 1976, and its school building remains in Laurens; grades 7 through 12 have been shared with Pocahontas Area since 2020, after grades 9 through 12 began sharing there in 2017. Laurens Public Library keeps a digital archive of the Laurens Sun from 1885 through 2024 alongside local-history books, giving the city a paper trail that runs from its first decade into the present. The local scoop is a small Pocahontas County city where the school boundary and the newspaper archive both keep the older town name in daily use.
