Lawrence, IL

Lawrence is an unincorporated McHenry County community in Chemung Township, just northwest of Harvard. The settlement’s name came from Lawrence Bigsby, who owned the original town site, and a post office operated here from 1856 until 1903. That makes Lawrence one of those places whose history is easier to find in old mail routes and township maps than in a downtown. The surrounding country is classic northwest Illinois: broad cropland, farm lanes, and small communities strung between Harvard and the Wisconsin line.

Chemung Township still groups Lawrence with Big Foot, Chemung, and Harmilda, while Harvard supplies larger town services and a Metra connection toward the Chicago region. The township also points visitors toward the Historic Starline Factory, a former industrial complex that now hosts events and creative work. Lawrence itself remains a small rural settlement, but its location puts it inside a working landscape with rail access, preserved industrial space, and farms in every direction.
