About Lawrenceville

Lawrenceville is Lawrence County’s seat on the Embarras River, a southeast Illinois city northwest of Vincennes. The county chose the site in 1821, and Lawrenceville has remained the seat ever since; the city was laid out that year, incorporated as a town in 1835, and became a city in 1895. The river still borders the civic map, alongside the courthouse, schools, and older neighborhoods. Lawrenceville is an Illinois county seat whose map is river, county government, and a long line of early settlement.
