Lawton, MI

Lawton is a Van Buren County village in southwest Michigan, with the 2020 census counting 1,850 residents. Its story starts with the Michigan Central Railroad reaching the area in 1848. Nathan Lawton donated land for a depot, originally called Paw Paw Station, and the post office soon gave the community his name. The railroad made Lawton a place where agricultural goods and travelers could move out toward the larger Southwest Michigan network. Today, the village is putting its energy into a recognizable downtown center, with the master plan calling for mixed-use activity, public gathering space, historic character, and industrial uses kept in the wider picture.

The Lawton Heritage Museum occupies the former wine cellars of the Lions Heritage Community Center, giving the village a wonderfully specific place to keep its local memory.
