Leming, TX

Leming is an Atascosa County census-designated place of 841 residents in the 2020 census, at the intersection of U.S. Highway 281 and Farm Road 1470 about 12 miles northeast of Jourdanton. The first post office opened in 1880 under the name Las Gallinas. When the San Antonio, Uvalde and Gulf Railroad reached the community in 1902, residents petitioned for the name Leming, honoring P. B. Leming, who managed the line's development.

The community built its institutions early. First Baptist Church dates to 1913, the Leming school district formed that same year, and a brick school building followed in 1914. The local school later joined Pleasanton Independent School District in 1963, while the post office remains part of the place's present-day map under ZIP code 78050. Local churches, farm roads, and the post office still mark the community beyond the highway corridor. Leming is a South Texas crossroads of farm roads, scattered homes, and the railroad history that changed its name.
