Tucked into the Rio Grande Valley just ten minutes north of Socorro, Lemitar is a quiet rural community of around 350 residents. The village was founded in 1831, taking its name from the wild lemita bushes that grew along the riverbanks. Early settlers put down roots along the historic Camino Real, building the adobe church of La Sagrada Familia, which still stands near the historic cemetery.
