Leonard, TX

Leonard is a Fannin County city on U.S. 69, 20 miles northwest of Greenville and 34 miles southeast of Denison. The 2020 census counted 1,987 residents. The Missouri, Kansas & Texas Railroad reached the area in 1880, and the Leonard heirs laid out a 100-acre townsite around a depot, streets, a small park, and town square. Leonard incorporated in 1889 and became the marketing center for the surrounding agricultural area. The square still does the orienting. City Hall, public works, water service, and Leonard Independent School District keep the town's civic map local, while the Leonard Picnic began with the 1880 town-lot auction and continues as an annual event. Current city notices cover streets, water, public meetings, and downtown revitalization. Leonard is a small North Texas town where a rail-built square still carries the agricultural and civic routines.
