Leroy, AL

Leroy is a Washington County census-designated place in southwest Alabama, about 60 miles north of Mobile. Before the post office arrived, the community was known as New Canaan, Possum Corner, and Dogwood Level. Theodore Cheseborough Bowling established the Leroy post office and country store on January 8, 1896, naming the place for his late father, Capt. Robert Leroy Bowling. The old post office and Bowling home are among the community's oldest original structures. Leroy is an Alabama place where three earlier names and one family story still sit behind the sign.
