Leupp, AZ

Located on the Navajo Nation in Coconino County, Leupp sits about 50 miles east of Flagstaff and 30 miles northwest of Winslow. Daily life in town revolves around the local chapter house, health clinic, churches, and a couple of schooling options, including a K-8 public school and a K-12 community school. It is a peaceful, rural setting where ranching, traditional arts, and Navajo culture shape everyday routines, with many residents commuting to Flagstaff or Winslow for work and shopping.

The area also has a deep and complex history. The original settlement sat along the Little Colorado River, where a Bureau of Indian Affairs boarding school opened in 1902. After severe flooding caused repeated damage, the community relocated to higher ground in 1960. During World War II, the abandoned original site was briefly repurposed as the Leupp Isolation Center for Japanese American detainees before operations moved elsewhere. Today, modern Leupp remains a close-knit, quiet community with strong ties to its heritage and open high-desert surroundings.
