About Lewiston

Lewiston is a Winona County city in southeastern Minnesota, about 15 miles from Winona, 35 miles from Rochester, and 45 miles from La Crosse, Wisconsin. The 2020 census counted 1,533 residents. Hills and valleys from the bluff-land country surround the city, while agriculture remains central to the wider county. A post office has operated in Lewiston since 1872, and the city was named for pioneer settler Jonathan Smith Lewis. U.S. Highway 14 gives the city a direct east-west road connection through the bluff country.

Lewiston-Altura Independent School District 857 places its junior and senior high school near U.S. Highway 14, while St. John's Lutheran School provides preschool through eighth grade and Immanuel Lutheran Silo School adds another local education setting. The Community Center brings City Hall, the senior center, and a gathering space together on Rice Street. A volunteer fire department and ambulance service operate from Fremont Street near the highway. Lewiston's map joins bluff-country farms, schools, city services, and the regional pull of three larger cities across Minnesota and Wisconsin.
