Liberal was founded in 1880 as one of the most unusual social experiments in the country. A lawyer named George Walser bought 2,000 acres in southwest Missouri and invited free thinkers and rationalists to create a town without churches or saloons. The community drew national attention throughout the 1880s, especially after opening a short-lived Freethought University dedicated to lectures and debate. It was an eccentric start that put this small corner of Barton County on the map.

Over the years, traditional families moved in, churches were built, and Liberal settled into life as a quiet farming community. Today, the town offers a relaxed, affordable lifestyle near the Kansas border, complete with local schools, safe streets, and easy drives to regional hubs like Joplin.
