Liberty borough (Tioga County), PA

Liberty is a borough in Tioga County, formed from Liberty Township in 1893. The local name goes back to the Williamson Road and an early blockhouse: according to township history, the first settler Anthony took possession of a twenty-by-forty-foot refuge built for road workers, and the place was long called Block House. That gives Liberty a road-and-frontier origin rather than a railroad or factory one.

By the late nineteenth century, lumbering, tanning, and flour mills had made the settlement a working center, while a post office arrived in 1824. Liberty Township history describes a productive agricultural district with orchards, farms, schools, and churches around the borough. Today the borough sits in a wooded Tioga County landscape in the surrounding hills at the intersection of local roads, with the Block House story still the quickest way to distinguish it from other Liberties. The local scoop is that the name sounds abstract, but the place started with a very concrete roadside shelter.
