Libertyville, IL

Libertyville has three Metra stations within a village whose 2020 population was 20,579. The downtown station and one Prairie Crossing station serve the Milwaukee District North line between Fox Lake and Chicago Union Station; a second Prairie Crossing station serves the North Central line between Antioch and Union Station, with an O'Hare stop. Pace buses, bicycle parking at the stations, and a network of local and county trails add other ways to reach the village center. The railroad arrived in 1881 and prompted rapid construction of homes, stores, churches, and mills before Libertyville incorporated in 1882. Today the village lies about 37 miles from Chicago and seven miles west of Lake Michigan. Along Milwaukee Avenue, the downtown Metra station, Cook Park, Cook Memorial Library, and Village Hall sit within the same historic commercial corridor.

community activity extends from that corridor into a municipal park system of 21 sites covering more than 360 acres and roughly 11,000 public trees. Butler Lake Park provides paths, fishing access, sports fields, and picnic areas, while the village map ties local bicycle routes to the Des Plaines River and North Shore trails. The Adler Arts Center occupies architect David Adler's historic home and runs year-round music and art instruction, exhibitions, writing programs, workshops, and youth camp. Downtown organizations add a recurring market and event calendar. MainStreet Libertyville organizes the farmers market, Lunch in the Park, Car Fun on 21, Wine About Winter, and Dickens of a Holiday, and the village listed three multi-day festival weekends for 2026. These programs use the same Milwaukee Avenue district that grew around the nineteenth-century railroad.
