Mundelein, IL

Mundelein went through quite an identity search before settling on its current name, changing titles five times over its history. Early English settlers called it Mechanics Grove, followed by stints as Holcomb, Rockefeller, and even Area after a local business school. The village finally took the name Mundelein in 1925 in honor of Cardinal George Mundelein, who helped establish the University of Saint Mary of the Lake seminary here. Trains have long tied the town together. Today, commuters catch Metra into Chicago, while the historic Soo Line train depot from the rail boom days sits preserved as a local museum in Lions Field.

The downtown district around the Metra station has seen plenty of fresh energy lately. New transit-friendly apartment communities like Station 250 and Morris Station give renters modern options within easy walking distance of the platform. For daily travel, weekday Metra trains run straight to downtown Chicago, while nearby Prairie Crossing offers extra weekend routes. Pace bus routes and on-demand local rides connect residents to neighboring retail and employment hubs in Libertyville and Vernon Hills, keeping average commutes under thirty minutes.

Home to around 32,000 residents, Mundelein is a diverse and welcoming community with a healthy mix of single-family neighborhoods and rental options. Over a third of the population is Hispanic or Latino, which shows in the town's fantastic variety of authentic family-owned restaurants, bakeries, and local markets. A favorite community hub is the Fremont Public Library.
