About Lincolnton

Lincolnton is the Lincoln County seat in eastern Georgia, about 17 miles northeast of Washington on U.S. 378. The 2020 census counted 1,480 residents. The city and county were named for General Benjamin Lincoln, and the town began as the county seat in 1798 before incorporation as a city in 1953. The Lincolnton Historic District includes 133 historic properties, giving the courthouse-centered town an unusually intact early footprint. The nearby Savannah River is held behind Lake Thurmond, and Elijah Clark State Park sits about seven miles northeast of town on the lake's western shore.
