Lindenhurst, NY

The Great South Bay defines Lindenhurst's southern edge and makes the waterfront both a public asset and a source of storm exposure. Hurricane Sandy flooded more than half of the village's streets on October 30, 2012. Lindenhurst began in 1873, took its present name in 1891, and incorporated in 1923 within the Town of Babylon; 27,148 residents were counted in 2020. The Long Island Rail Road's Lindenhurst station serves the Babylon Branch and is accessible, with an elevator and a connection to Suffolk County Transit. Downtown activity concentrates around Village Square on North Wellwood Avenue. In 2026 the village scheduled free concerts there every Friday and Saturday evening from late June through September, along with a Saturday farmers market for produce, baked goods, specialty foods, and crafts.

Along the bay, Shore Road Park has a waterfront playground renovated in 2023, and Charles J. Cowan Marina provides benches, fishing, and permitted crabbing; the village rents dock space at five shoreline locations through its 2026 lottery. Inland, Village Park combines ball fields, basketball, tennis, pickleball, an accessible playground, and open space beside Fellers Pond. Lindenhurst Memorial Library extends public activity indoors: adult cardholders can reserve equipment in its Learning Lab, and its 2026 calendar included Cricut instruction, all-abilities art programs, and GED and English-language information sessions.
