About Lisbon

Lisbon is a Linn County city tucked beside Mount Vernon, with Cedar Rapids close enough to sit in the broader orbit. The 2020 census counted 2,233 residents. It was laid out in 1851, incorporated in 1875, and grew into the more agricultural half of the Lisbon-Mount Vernon pair: Mount Vernon became the college and commercial center, while Lisbon picked up farm services, shipping, and railroad connections. The Chicago and North Western Railroad arrived in 1859, and the Lincoln Highway later ran through the two towns.

Lisbon still has that practical small-city shape. Lisbon Community School District gives the town its school center, Lisbon City Park and Bunting Field handle local sports, and the two communities share nearby events, services, and the easy back-and-forth of eastern Linn County. Cedar Rapids is the bigger regional pull; Mount Vernon is the immediate neighbor with Cornell College. Lisbon's local scoop is a railroad-and-farm town that grew beside a college town without getting swallowed by it.
