Lisbon, IL

Lisbon is a Kendall County village with roots in the prairie travel routes of northern Illinois. Horace Moore built the first frame house at the site in 1836, and Lancelot Rood laid out the village that same year. Levi Hills's log tavern and stage stop connected the new settlement to roads between Joliet, Chicago, and Ottawa; the post office moved to Lisbon in September 1836. The 2020 census counted 271 residents. Today U.S. 52 passes along the north side, about 12 miles south of Yorkville and 22 miles west of Joliet.

John Moore Park, Lisbon Consolidated School, West Lisbon Church, and Lisbon Bethlehem Lutheran Church give the village a compact set of places people recognize. Students are split between Lisbon Community Consolidated School District 90 and Newark Community High School District 18, reflecting the wider rural school network around Kendall County. Yorkville handles county-seat functions, while Joliet is the larger regional connection. Lisbon's present form still follows its original role as a stop on the road: a small village set among fields, with a post-office history, school grounds, churches, and a park in the center of a much larger regional service landscape.
