Liverpool, PA

Liverpool is a Perry County borough on the west bank of the Susquehanna River, about 30 miles north of Harrisburg. The 2020 census counted 959 residents. U.S. Routes 11 and 15 now carry the north-south traffic, but the borough’s older streets still sit where the river, canal, and mountain roads meet. Liverpool is close enough to Harrisburg for regular commuting while keeping the scale of a small river settlement. The river remains visible from streets above the old canal line, and the crossing still organizes local trips.

John Huggins laid out Liverpool in 1808, and the town was named for the English home of the Stailey family, its early settlers. The Susquehanna Division of the Pennsylvania Canal reached the community in 1831, bringing boats, teamsters, boatbuilders, and warehouse work. Lumber, coal, grain, and finished goods moved through the river corridor, and Liverpool incorporated as a borough in 1832. The canal is now under Route 11/15, but the old buildings and riverfront street plan still show why this was once a working transportation town.
