Livonia, NY

Livonia is a Livingston County town on the eastern side of the county, with a village of the same name and several hamlets spread between two Finger Lakes. The 2010 census counted 7,809 residents. Conesus Lake forms much of the western edge, while Hemlock Lake lies to the east and south. The region was historically Seneca country, and the name associated with Conesus is tied to a Seneca word for berries. Livonia's geography is therefore unusually easy to picture: a rural town stretched between two long lakes, with the village and hamlets filling the roads between them.

Lakeville, at the foot of Conesus Lake, grew around a mill built in 1792 and later became a landing place for excursion trains and lake steamers. The Livonia town map also includes Livonia Center, Hemlock, South Livonia, South Lima, and the village of Livonia, each with its own small center. New York Route 15 carries north-south traffic, while the lake shores bring the Finger Lakes story close to farm roads and year-round homes. Conesus and Hemlock both belong to the Genesee River basin, but in Livonia they feel like the town's two defining edges.
