Lometa, TX

Lometa is a Lampasas County city built around a small rise and a pair of old transportation lines. Its name comes from lomita, Spanish for “little hill,” and the town was platted as a railroad stop in 1886 after the nearby stagecoach settlement of Senterfitt gave way to a new center. U.S. 183 and U.S. 190 meet the local road network, while BNSF and the Heart of Texas Railroad keep the town’s rail history visible. One traffic light stands in the middle of town, a tiny detail that says a lot about Lometa’s scale.

Local life runs through Lometa ISD, whose prekindergarten-through-12th-grade campus gives the city one shared school calendar. Spring’s Diamondback Jubilee, the livestock show, and the summer junior rodeo bring the town together around ranching, youth, and regional tradition. A municipal park and rodeo grounds add an outdoor gathering place, while Lampasas and the wider Killeen–Temple–Fort Hood area fill in larger errands and jobs. Lometa has a small-town center, but its roads, rails, school, and seasonal events connect it to a much larger slice of central Texas.
