Lonaconing, MD

Tucked into the Georges Creek Valley at the base of Dan's Mountain, Lonaconing is a quiet Western Maryland town of about 1,000 residents. Maryland Route 36 doubles as Main Street, carrying you straight through a compact center lined with historic brick storefronts and classic family homes. The current streetscape dates back to a major rebuild after an 1881 fire, giving the whole downtown an inviting, time-tested feel.

The area's roots in coal and iron are still easy to spot, especially around the preserved stone furnace in town and the rows of hillside houses along the steep valley slopes. Everyday life revolves around local spots like the George's Creek Library, community parks, and easy access to the surrounding mountain trails. It is an unpretentious, close-knit place where you can find affordable living and a slower, peaceful pace.
