About Lonaconing

Lonaconing is built into the Georges Creek Valley at the western toe of Dan's Mountain, with Maryland Route 36 serving as Main Street. The 2020 census counted 1,001 residents. Its center preserves the shape of an industrial town: the Lonaconing Historic District includes 278 buildings and structures, including storefronts, worker housing, former company offices, and the Lonaconing Furnace. Main Street's current appearance also carries a specific event. A fire destroyed most of downtown in 1881, and the brick-and-frame streetscape rose over the old town center.

The furnace is the clearest clue to Lonaconing's first working economy. The Georges Creek Coal and Iron Company built it in the 1830s; at its peak, the operation employed about 260 workers and made pig iron for stoves, farm tools, and hardware bound for the C&O Canal. After iron production ended, coal became the company's focus. The George's Creek Library keeps that history close with a history room and architectural details modeled on the furnace and mine pillars. The old commercial core, furnace park, library, and steep slopes of workers' houses still give the valley town a map you can read at a glance.
