Lone Rock, WI

Lone Rock is a Richland County village on the north side of the Wisconsin River, where U.S. 14 meets Wisconsin 130. The name came from a large sandstone outcrop near the riverbank, a landmark used by early river raftsmen. Much of the rock was later cut for village basements and foundations; what remains lies west of Highway 130 across from Brace Park. The Wisconsin River and the Lower Wisconsin State Riverway keep the village tied to bluffs, water, and the long rural routes of southwestern Wisconsin.

Lone Rock was founded in 1856, and its Civil War history is unusually visible for a small river town. The 6th Wisconsin Battery was organized here under Henry Dillon, and a bronze monument in Battery Park remembers the local men who served. The village is part of the River Valley School District; Lone Rock Elementary closed in 2018, leaving students connected to schools elsewhere in the district. Today, the highway junction, river access, park, school network, and remaining sandstone give Lone Rock a strong sense of place.
