About Loogootee

Loogootee is Martin County's only incorporated city, on the county's western side along the Daviess County line. The 2020 census counted 2,601 residents. The town was established in 1853 as a railroad community, and its post office has operated since 1857. Several U.S. highways meet through the center, giving Loogootee the road-and-services role that comes with being the county's main city even though the county seat is in Shoals. The East Fork of the White River shapes the broader county landscape to the east and south. Loogootee also has a school-and-sports identity.

Jack Butcher, the local high school basketball coach, finished with an 806-250 record, and that record remains one of the city's memorable markers. Loogootee Community Schools gives the town a local K-12 center, while Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane sits about ten miles north and forms part of the area's federal workplace map. Martin County's recycling center and the White River Co-op sit along the highway edge, making the practical map easy to recognize: downtown roads, school, farm services, and a naval facility just beyond town.
