Lorena, TX

Lorena is a McLennan County city of 1,785 residents in the 2020 census, about 13 miles south of Waco. Its story is written in cotton and rail: settled in 1854, first called Aerl Station, and later renamed for Lorena Westbrook, it grew around an MKT stop that carried local cotton toward market. That past still shows up along Center Street, where the Olde Town stretch brings together older buildings, small shops, and restaurants. Interstate 35 is close by, while the older center sits on the road network that came before the freeway.

McBrayer City Park gives the middle of town a pavilion, picnic area, and hike-and-bike trail. Lorena High School's fields and courts also matter locally, since the Leopards culture is woven into the city's school-centered rhythm. The local scoop is that Lorena is tied closely to Waco for regional trips, yet its own center still makes sense as a railroad-and-cotton town: start at Center Street, then follow the frontage roads and old routes outward.
