Loretto, KY

Loretto is a small Marion County city at the meeting of Kentucky Routes 52 and 49, in the rolling Knobs country south of Bardstown and northwest of Lebanon. Its name comes from the Sisters of Loretto, the Catholic congregation founded at nearby St. Mary in 1812, whose own name points back to Loreto, Italy. The town's map is modest, but its name carries a long religious and regional history.

Most people who know Loretto know it through Maker's Mark. The distillery at Star Hill Farm sits a few miles east of town, with bourbon production, tours, tastings, restaurants, and red-wax bottles tying Loretto to Kentucky's bourbon trail. The older Burks mill and distillery story still sits beneath that brand, connecting waterpower, grain, family enterprise, and modern tourism. Around town, Route 52 and Route 49 lead through farms, churches, and wooded hills toward Lebanon, Springfield, and Bardstown. Loretto is a small place with one nationally recognized name and a deep local setting behind it.
