Louisa, KY

Louisa is Lawrence County’s seat in eastern Kentucky, where the Levisa Fork meets the Tug Fork and forms the Big Sandy River. The 2020 census counted 2,679 residents. The river also marks part of the Kentucky-West Virginia line, so Louisa’s map is a border story as much as a county-seat story. U.S. 23 follows the western side of town, carrying the valley north toward Ashland and south toward the hills around Staffordsville.

The bridge is the local giveaway: a quarter-mile concrete span crosses the two forks of the Big Sandy, giving Louisa a piece of infrastructure that feels larger than the city around it. Septemberfest brings music, food, and craft vendors each fall, while the Lawrence County Public Library keeps the everyday civic side in place. Louisa is a river-junction town with a county courthouse, a state-line view, and a festival calendar that makes the Big Sandy valley feel like one connected neighborhood.
