Lowden, IA

Lowden was platted in 1857 as the Chicago and North Western Railway was projected through the area, and the railroad soon became the reason the Cedar County city grew. The name came from Loudonville, Ohio, the former home of one of the early settlers. By 1858 the rail line had reached Lowden, turning a surveyed town site into a trade connection between Clinton and Cedar Rapids. Later, the Lincoln Highway in 1914 and the Herbert Hoover Highway in 1923 added more road history to the same corridor.

Passenger rail service ended in 1950, but Lowden kept its place as a local center. The North Cedar Community School District now connects the city with Clarence, Mechanicsville, and Stanwood, while Lowden Elementary gives the town its own school presence. Lowden Memorial Park adds baseball diamonds, disc golf, and a walking path to the civic mix. The city’s story is a handoff from rail to road to school district: each era changed the way people arrived, but the Cedar County crossroads stayed put.
