Lowellville, OH

Lowellville had 996 residents in 2020, along the Mahoning River in eastern Mahoning County near the Pennsylvania line. The village grew from several river settlements that joined around 1836, when the first store and a new village layout began to pull the area together. Mills, a tannery, sawmills, planing shops, and river trade in coal, dairy, and wool gave Lowellville an early working life. Italian immigrants added another chapter in the early twentieth century, and the village became part of the industrial and farming network around Youngstown.

The Mahoning still gives Lowellville its clearest sense of place. Riverfront plans, a canoe launch, and Spring Commons Park look toward the water, while Youngstown-Lowellville Road follows the valley toward the larger city. The village’s Mt. Carmel Festival remains a major summer gathering, carrying forward the Italian-American traditions that became part of Lowellville’s story. Old mill sites, hillside streets, and the river corridor keep the nineteenth-century outline visible even as the village settles into its present role between Youngstown and the Pennsylvania communities east of the border.
