Loyalton, CA

Loyalton is Sierra County's only incorporated city, set in the broad Sierra Valley at about 4,930 feet. The place began as a settlement named Smith's Neck, then took the name Loyalton during the Civil War as local sentiment favored the Union. Rail service arrived with the Boca and Loyalton line in 1901, joining the town to a ranching landscape that still shapes the valley's look and work. California State Route 49 runs through town before meeting Route 70 near Vinton, making Loyalton a northern gateway into the county's road system.

Downieville, the county seat, is roughly a fifty-mile drive along Route 49, so county business can mean a long trip through mountain country. The city works as a valley meeting point for ranches, homes, school trips, and highway travel. Its scale is modest, but the combination of elevation, distance, and routes toward Vinton and Downieville makes Loyalton feel tied to the whole county.
