Lucama, NC

Lucama's name comes with a good local story and a little uncertainty. Folk tradition says Josephus Daniels combined the first two letters of Lucy, Carrie, and Mary to create the name around 1883. A post office opened in 1884, and the town incorporated in 1889. Lucama grew as a railroad town in Wilson County, with the tracks, Main Street, and nearby U.S. 301 giving the small community a commercial spine.

The Lucama Municipal Historic District preserves that early pattern. Listed on the National Register in 1986, the district includes 42 contributing buildings: the Will Davis Store, Lucama Depot from 1905, early homes, and Lucama Methodist Church from 1915. Main Street, Railroad Street, Goldsboro Street, and Black Creek Road frame the historic core. Today Lucama remains connected to Wilson and eastern North Carolina by its highways, local shops, churches, and preserved streets. The depot and storefronts still keep the railroad in view. The town's name may be folk invention, but its railroad-era buildings give the story a solid shape.
