About Lutsen

Lutsen sits on Minnesota’s North Shore of Lake Superior, within the Superior National Forest and close to Cascade River State Park and the Superior Hiking Trail. The community is 18 miles southwest of Grand Marais, but the lake and the forest are the stronger coordinates. Here, resort roads, trailheads, and the long shoreline all meet in a place where the landscape sets the terms. The seasons keep those same roads busy for different reasons. Winter has its slopes; summer has its trails.

Lutsen Resort began in 1885 as Minnesota’s first resort, and Lutsen Mountains added skiing in 1948. That history still shapes the local economy, which includes the ski area and several other resorts. Hiking along the Superior Hiking Trail and nearby Cascade River adds a warm-season counterpart to winter slopes, while Cook County ISD 166 gives the community its school connection. Lutsen’s local story is a four-season one: Lake Superior at the front door, the forest behind it, and tourism woven through both.
