Luttrell, TN

Luttrell sits in a valley between Copper Ridge and Clinch Mountain in Union County, where Flat Creek runs toward the Holston River. It started as Cedar Ford, a name that fit the crossing, then became Luttrell in 1890. The nineteenth-century town had a lime kiln and marble quarry; when the Powell Valley Railroad arrived in 1887, Luttrell became a shipping center for the surrounding area. That gives the place a neat local split: creek crossing, quarry town, then rail town.

Luttrell is still one of Union County’s three incorporated cities, with the municipal office on Park Road and Knoxville close enough to shape the wider orbit. The landscape does much of the talking—Copper Ridge to the north, Clinch Mountain to the south, and the Holston watershed around the valley. It’s the kind of place where the road names make more sense after you know the geology: the old Cedar Ford crossing, the marble belt, and the rail line all point to the same small valley community.
