Lydia, LA

Lydia is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Iberia Parish, southeast of New Iberia on the edge of Acadiana’s sugar-cane country. The 2020 census counted 892 residents. U.S. 90 forms the northern edge, putting the community on a direct road between New Iberia, Lafayette, and Morgan City. That highway position is part of Lydia’s everyday geography, while the surrounding landscape keeps the place tied to Iberia Parish’s agricultural and coastal connections.

Lydia began with a plantation. In 1869, Hypolite Patout Jr. bought 7,200 acres for sugar cane, cattle, and lumber production and named the plantation for his eldest daughter. The community that grew around it kept the name. Today, Lydia is also described as a gateway toward Cypremort Point, Vermilion Bay, and the Gulf of Mexico, linking a small residential settlement to the waterways south of Iberia Parish. Its scale—892 people in 2020—makes the original plantation footprint and the north-south highway useful clues: Lydia is a named community shaped by agriculture, coastal access, and the regional road network.
