Lynd, MN

Lynd is a city in Lyon County, Minnesota, on Minnesota State Highway 23 with the Redwood River running through town. It was platted in 1888 and named for state senator James Lynd, who was killed at the Lower Sioux Agency during the 1862 conflict. That gives the city a name tied to difficult state history, while its place in southwestern Minnesota remains grounded in river and county geography. The Redwood River begins farther west, crosses Lyon County, and continues toward the Minnesota River, making it part of a much larger regional waterway.

Lynd also held an early county role. The Kiel and Morgan Hotel in town served as the original Lyon County seat, a reminder that the city's importance once reached beyond its current size. Highway 23 continues to connect Lynd with Marshall and other Lyon County places, while the river remains the most immediate natural reference. The story here is compact but layered: a late nineteenth-century plat, a senator's name, an early county hotel, and a river moving through the center of town.
