Lyons, IN

Lyons is a Greene County town in Washington Township, platted in 1869 and named for Squire Joe Lyons, a county official from nearby Bloomfield. The post office opened in 1870, when the town was becoming a small service center for the West Fork country. Greene County historical records place an undertaker in Lyons by 1870 and a merchant there by 1872, evidence of the shops and trades that supported the surrounding farms. The first Lyons school opened in 1871 on Franklin and Wine Streets, and nearby district students were sent into town as rural schools closed.

That older civic role still gives Lyons a clear center. The town is part of the Bloomington metropolitan area, and Greene County’s current recreation map includes Lyons Town Park and Lyons Raceway Park alongside its community sites. A dedicated history of Washington Township, including Lyons, sits in Indiana State Library collections. Lyons is a small place whose map comes through its 1869 plat, post office, school, parks, and the township businesses that grew around them.
