About Macksburg

Macksburg is a village in Washington County, Ohio, United States, along the West Fork of Duck Creek. The 2020 census counted 120 residents. The village is about 28 miles south of Cambridge, Ohio. In 1860, an oil seep in the area of Duck Creek led to the discovery of oil at a depth of 59 feet, on William Rayley's farm. A newcomer can read Macksburg through the overlap of its older landmarks, surrounding geography, and current places. For a newcomer, Macksburg comes into focus through those concrete links among its past, landscape, and current routines. The resulting Macksburg Oil Field became one of Ohio's first oil fields.
