Macon, MS

Set along the Noxubee River in east Mississippi, Macon is a quiet county seat of around 2,500 residents with deep historic roots. The town grew around an early river crossing along the route between Nashville and New Orleans, and it even briefly served as the temporary state capital back in 1863. Today, daily life centers on the courthouse square, giving the community a relaxed, traditional small-town feel.

Downtown holds plenty of character, with quiet streets and brick buildings that have stood for generations. In a unique local twist, the town converted its 1907 county jail into the Noxubee County Library, which now serves as a welcoming community hub hosting local history projects and events. It is a peaceful, close-knit place where neighbors know one another and everyday life moves at an unhurried pace.
