The community traces its roots back to the 1860s, when a new railway stop opened and took the name of railroad treasurer John Madeira. The original 1872 train depot still stands beside the tracks today, repurposed into a popular local restaurant. You can explore that history at the Miller House Museum, located a couple of blocks from Miami Avenue, where the local historical society preserves artifacts and records from the town's farming and railroad beginnings.

Throughout the year, downtown Madeira serves as the main gathering spot for community events. Miami Avenue fills with neighbors for annual highlights like the summer Street Dance, the Fourth of July parade, and seasonal street festivals. Families often wander through the Hosbrook Bird Sanctuary to check out the library's Story Trail along the wooded path. Just east of the center, the renovated McDonald Commons provides modern athletic fields, pickleball courts, and playground space for weekend games and family outings.
