About Madelia

Madelia is a Watonwan County city along the Watonwan River, with Minnesota 15 and 60 carrying traffic through southern Minnesota. The 2020 census counted 2,396 residents. The city was founded in 1857 and has had a post office since 1860, giving the river town a long-running civic center. The river is woven into the south side of town through Watona Park, where the landscape moves from ballfields and a playground to canoe access and the campground. Watona Park also holds a WPA stone shelter, disc golf, the Madelia Golf Course, and winter routes for skiing and snowmobiles.

Madelia Public Schools serves grades K-12, and the Watonwan County Historical Museum and county library connect the city to the surrounding farm region. Park Days brings parades, music, food, and art to the same riverfront in summer. The riverfront is where ball teams, campers, golfers, and festival crowds overlap through the seasons. The local scoop is practical: Madelia's schools, park, river, roads, and seasonal events all fit into a compact southern Minnesota city map.
