Madison, VA

Madison is the county-seat town of Madison County, Virginia, where the courthouse and surrounding historic districts give the compact center much of its character. The present brick courthouse was completed in 1829–1830 by former University of Virginia workmen, and many nearby buildings still carry the proportions and materials of that period. James City Historic District, Madison County Courthouse Historic District, Woodbourne, and The Homeplace add several different chapters to the town's architectural record. Plaques on older buildings and a local historical society booklet help fill in the people and businesses behind those facades and preserve the town's civic history.

The older landscape reaches beyond the town limits. Hebron Lutheran Church, north of Madison, dates to 1740 and remains in continuous Lutheran use, while the courthouse keeps county business rooted in the center. The 2020 census counted 205 residents. Madison's scale makes the courthouse more than a government building: it is the place around which the town's streets, historic houses, and county errands still meet.
