Magdalena, NM

Magdalena is a Socorro County village at the foot of the Magdalena Mountains, where the 2020 census counted 806 residents. Its name comes from Magdalena Peak, whose rock profile gave rise to the local “Lady on the Mountain” story. A post office opened in 1884, and the village incorporated in 1913 during a mining boom. For generations, ranching and the cattle trail mattered alongside the mines, giving Magdalena the long-running nickname “Trail’s End.”

That mix of mining, ranching, and travel still shows up around town. The old railroad depot houses the Magdalena Public Library and Boxcar Museum, and the Magdalena-Socorro rail spur once carried ore, wool, timber, and livestock toward the smelters and markets. Magdalena Municipal Schools runs a single Pre-K–12 campus, with students drawn from a wide rural area. U.S. 60 heads through the village toward Socorro and the Arizona line, while the mountains rise immediately to the west. Magdalena feels like a place where a working frontier past remains visible in the street grid, depot, peak, and school bus routes.
